Planned Maintenance Ltd · Authority Website Case Study

Commercial Construction Maintenance + Specialist Civils Southampton + South Coast

Turning Broad Capability Into Digital Authority.

Planned Maintenance Ltd delivers a broad range of commercial construction, maintenance and specialist services. The problem was not a lack of capability. It was making that capability feel coherent.

We turned a complicated commercial proposition into one structured digital presence designed for procurement, facilities teams, contractors, developers and organisations looking for a capable long-term partner.

01

The Starting Point

A Capable Business With a Positioning Problem.

Planned Maintenance Ltd had breadth. But breadth can become a weakness online when every service competes for attention.

Commercial construction, maintenance, specialist groundworks, hazardous-environment civils, fire protection, EV infrastructure, fabrication and related project support all needed a clear place.

Simply listing everything would have made the company look fragmented rather than capable.

The first job was not designing pages. It was deciding what this business should mean online.

The Repositioning

We moved the website away from the feel of a small trades business and towards an established commercial contractor built for larger decisions, larger sites and larger opportunities.

02

Audience Strategy

Designed for People Responsible for Appointing Contractors.

Once the audience changes, the website has to change with it. Commercial decision makers need clarity, relevance and reassurance rather than consumer-style sales noise.

01

Facilities + Property Teams

People responsible for maintaining operational buildings need to understand breadth, responsiveness and capability quickly.

02

Main Contractors

The website needs to demonstrate that PML can fit within wider project and contractor environments.

03

Industrial Operators

Specialist work requires a digital presence that feels comfortable around technically demanding sites.

04

Developers + Site Managers

Clear service pathways help decision makers establish relevance before committing time to an enquiry.

03

Strategy Before Design

This Was Built as a Business Communication System, Not a Collection of Web Pages.

Authority begins before layout. We established the proposition, audience, service relationships, customer journey and search architecture before treating visual design as the answer.

01 / POSITION Define the Business

One coherent commercial contractor proposition rather than a collection of disconnected services.

02 / AUDIENCE Design Around the Buyer

Structure and messaging reflect the people assessing capability and risk.

03 / ARCHITECTURE Organise the Complexity

Service hierarchy gives every important capability a clear role within the overall business.

04 / ACTION Build the Route to Enquiry

Capability and reassurance progressively lead towards the appropriate next step.

04

Information Architecture

A Large Service Portfolio Without the Digital Clutter.

Authority gave us enough structural depth to separate service areas properly, create useful customer journeys and build an architecture that can continue expanding.

Commercial Proposition Construction, Maintenance + Specialist Capability

The business is understood first before the visitor is asked to choose a service.

Service Area Commercial Construction
Service Area Planned Maintenance
Service Area Specialist Civils
Service Area Fire Protection
Service Area EV Infrastructure
Service Area Fabrication + Project Support
Commercial Outcome Relevant Proof + Enquiry

The visitor moves from broad capability into the service, proof and contact route most relevant to the project.

05

Homepage Architecture

The Homepage Became a Commercial Landing Experience.

The homepage was not reduced to hero, services, about and contact. It became the strategic overview of the whole business.

01 Immediate Positioning
02 Geographic Relevance
03 Experience + Credibility
04 Core Service Architecture
05 Maintenance Capability
06 Specialist Site Capability
07 Trust + Accreditation
08 Final Conversion Pathway
06

Creative Direction

Commercial, Not Conventional Construction.

We deliberately avoided the visual language of a low-cost domestic trades website. The interface had to feel suitable for organisations appointing commercial contractors.

Strong Hierarchy Fast Commercial Understanding
Generous Space Premium Without Becoming Decorative
Industrial Imagery Scale + Technical Context
Controlled Interaction Movement With a Purpose
07

Bespoke Imagery + Art Direction

Imagery Was Designed Around the Website.

Photography became part of the positioning, not decoration added after the layout.

We developed a cinematic industrial direction around fabrication, welding, commercial environments and specialist work so the visual experience supported the scale and technical nature of the business.

Subject position, text space, contrast, mobile cropping and visual hierarchy were considered alongside the interface itself.

The image did not simply have to look good.

It had to work as a component of the desktop, tablet and mobile layout.

08

Reusable Design System

Authority Was Designed Into the System.

Instead of styling every page independently, we created repeatable visual and interaction rules that keep the website coherent and make future expansion more efficient.

Headers Navigation Hero Systems Service Cards Trust Components Accreditation Presentation CTA Systems Buttons Typography Responsive Spacing Content Structures Reusable Page Components
09

Individual Page Design

One Design System. Different Problems Solved Properly.

Authority does not mean cloning one template thirty times.

Major pages were reviewed individually. Where a service needed a different structure, the design system was applied intelligently rather than forcing the content into a layout that merely happened to exist already.

This gives the website variety where the content needs it without sacrificing brand consistency.

Sophisticated consistency, not repetitive sameness.

The system creates the rules. The content determines how those rules are applied.

10

Responsive UX

Mobile Was Designed, Not Checked Afterwards.

Responsive behaviour was part of development throughout the project.

Navigation + Header Behaviour

Mobile interaction and sticky-header behaviour were refined for smaller screens.

Content Order + Layout

Columns, cards and hierarchy were adjusted where mobile needed a different sequence.

Imagery + Typography

Image crops, text scale and spacing were treated as design decisions rather than compatibility fixes.

11

Conversion Architecture

Calls to Action Appeared When the Visitor Had a Reason to Act.

Conversion was considered alongside the information journey.

Progressive Reassurance

Capability and trust are established before asking for commitment.

Quick Enquiry Routes

Contact routes are integrated throughout the website system.

Contextual Calls to Action

CTAs belong to the page journey rather than being repeated without thought.

12

SEO Architecture

Search Visibility Began With the Information Architecture.

SEO shaped the website before metadata was written.

Service-Specific Relevance

Important services have distinct, structured places within the website.

Southampton + Hampshire Context

Geographic relevance is communicated without mass-producing thin location pages.

Internal Search Pathways

Hierarchy, headings and contextual links help users and search engines understand relationships.

13

Trust + Accreditation

Commercial Proof Needed Its Own Presentation System.

Accreditation has different weight in commercial procurement than a conventional consumer testimonial.

SafeContractor and 3core² assets were prepared consistently and incorporated into a reusable trust component rather than simply placing unrelated logos onto the page.

Authority Principle Proof should look as considered as the design around it.

The trust system can now be reused as accreditation and compliance information develops.

14

Performance Engineering

The Expensive-Looking Part Was Only the Visible Layer.

Optimisation became a substantial technical part of the project. Assets, scripts, caching, fonts, LCP delivery and page resources were investigated rather than relying on one optimisation switch.

01 Asset Optimisation

Individual files and page resources were reviewed for unnecessary weight.

02 Image Delivery

WebP imagery and image optimisation supported a visually rich design.

03 Custom PHP

Unnecessary homepage resources were prevented from loading rather than depending entirely on extra software.

04 Balanced Optimisation

Performance improvements were made without destroying the visual experience for the sake of an artificial score.

15

Technical Quality

Premium Design. Measured Technical Discipline.

During optimisation and testing, the build achieved strong technical quality scores while retaining the richer visual experience.

100 Accessibility

Strong accessibility result during testing.

100 Best Practices

Technical implementation aligned strongly with modern best practice checks.

100 SEO

Strong technical SEO result during testing.

0 Cumulative Layout Shift

Stable page presentation during the measured test.

16

What the Authority Build Actually Involved

Not More Pages. More Thinking Behind Every Page.

The final website is the visible outcome of a much larger strategic, creative and technical process.

Underneath the presentation is an extensible system designed to support future services, projects, search opportunities, proof and content without needing to rethink the website from scratch.
